Austin is amazing. Tex Mex and two dollar drinks and a killer music scene? Why don't I live here?! Maybe this hangover is a bit telling...

Anyways, while we are headed to Santa Fe on a glorious 80 degree day, if you're in NYC and want to pick up some eyeliner tips, I suggest you go to this:

arkansas was cool.

Greetings from the road (or the heartland, or bumblefuck USA, or whatever you want to call it. I have to say, I'm really enjoying my vacation from blogging. I did get my first traffic ticket today about five minutes after we entered Texas, but I guess that's to be expected. Today we went to Graceland and now I have a strange need to netflix every Elvis movie ever. Suddenly "so cheesy it's cool" has become my personal motto. Maybe that's the result of drinking a four pack of red bull a day and/or spending significant time in the bible belt. Not too sure.

So I'm back on the internet momentarily on our quest to Coachella to share two discoveries with you. The first is the thrilling revelation that people are starting to take notice of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Check out this Daily News article where the band reveals where their bizarre yet somehow totally appropriate name originated (and yeah, ok, it's the first time my blog has gotten actual press in a NY Daily Paper so I'm lamely giving props to myself here. oh well! Nicole just asked me what I meant by saying that the band was sonic and I actually have no idea, but it's a good thing i swear, so let's just go with it).

The second thing I need to share is this song that refuses to leave my head. Once again, so cheesy, it's fucking awesome. Or at least I think so, but that could obviously be the redbull talking. So right click, save as, and let me know what you think. Maybe I'll tell you later what band it actually is.

Vampires In Love (right click, save as, play loudly)

new pope today and it's not me

Did anyone go to the Bravery afterparty last night @ BLVD? Was it the unfathomable scenester cluster fuck that I could only imagine it to be? I mean... is it necessary to throw that band into the mix with Ultragrrrl, +1, Tiswas AND Misshapes? Is that too much of a lovefest?

Ok OK, I'm sure it was fun. I was happily eating ice cream instead. So it goes.

In other news...

- one of my favorite NYC bands, PS, are featured in a new commercial for Adidas! how exciting is that. you can watch the clip on their website here (go to the bottom of the page and click the link). I think it's a pretty great clip.

- Coma are playing this Thursday at Mercury @ 8:30. Listen to two samples of their songs here. Very rich shoegaze sound and vocalist Kristina both looks and sounds like an angel.

- Morning Theft finished shooting their first video this weekend for the song "Thirty Helens Agree." Dan told me that the clip was shot by director Ethan Borsuk, in Pat's (!) apartment. It took 14 hours to shoot and tells the story of a vicious cycle of relationships that go from one man with his wife and circles around with his mistress and her affair while the band plays. So no acting from the Morning Theft boys, but I want to know... are there actually going to be thirty helens in the video? I guess we will have to wait and see.

- Wyclef Jean will visit PBS' "Sesame Street" on Friday to perform a duet
with Cookie Monster about eating healthy foods. (Ok I know that this has nothing to do with ANYTHING but it's just too random to ignore...)

- this is why I love Jay Goodtimes more than a really tasty Red Lobster biscuit:

"It feels so fucking calculated, and yet I can't look away. They are like a 20 car pile up, but for some reason the emergency response team is able to keep a couple lanes open so traffic slowly streams by rubber necking all the way. It makes me want to punch myself where my balls should be while trying to give myself head. If you were able to bottle-up MisShapes and sell it as cologne, these kids would wreak of it. It's everything I hate about the New York music scene, and yet I occasionally find myself hoping for a spot on the fashionista runway they’ve perpetuated."

(on The Bravery last night at Bowery Ballroom... some say best review ever. some being me! and JAY Z was there? seriously? i don't think it gets any weirder...)

- ok i have nothing more to offer and i haven't even gone out lately and now i'm leaving the city for two weeks. but if you will be out at the hottness that is COACHELLA, and want to come to a party on friday, shoot me an email would you?

oops... wait... finally tonight, go Vicious @ Rothko (flier below). all of the bands are amazing, most notably Benzos and the Harlem Shakes (note to Jocelyn, the Harlem Shakes have a section on their website called "circle of death." it doesn't have any content yet, but i'm JUST SAYING!)

true love will find you in the end

due to some freak occurence in the universe, i managed to get a pair of tickets to see beck tonight (even though ticketweb was imploding the entire time). unfortunately, i'm not a huge Beck fan, and after a lot of thinking the tickets have been passed on to someone who is obviously a lot more of a devoted fan than I and who really deserved the intimate experience (although I"m kind of appauled at the way people reacted towards Stereogum after he posted about the show yesterday... some people really need to grow up). i am sort of bummed to be missing this show, but i guess my hope is that if it was an artist that I really loved that someone would do the same for me. idealistic? totally. totes.

If you're like me and you don't have tickets to see Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ North Six tonight (opening for Ambulance Ltd -- who have an astonishingly awesome new video), and can't wait until the 23rd to see them at Pianos (w/ Hopewell, who I also love), you can go see their lead singer Alec Ounsworth acoustic @ Pianos this Sunday (6pm).

New York Press says: "(Alec Ounsworth's) vocals are among the best in New York."

I can never keep up with new shows the way other people can, so just hop on over and read what Jay said because it contains a large amount of awesome for your summertime (Killers and Ted Leo and Pixies! and New Pornographers oh my!).

Tonight, Hot Aaron (who bartends at the Dark Room and likes to give me the finger every time he sees me) is having his birthday party @ Crash Mansion and The Walk-Up are playing at 9pm. Open bar is from 9-10.

Tomorrow night, The GoStation are playing at Pianos and Nicola and I are DJing a party at The Skinny from 10-4am (174 Orchard b/t Stanton and Houston) to raise funds for our roadtrip. This will be the GoStation afterparty and the last time you'll see me in NYC for two weeks most likely. So come out, have some drinks, hang out with drunk band members etc. etc. The GoStation plays at 10pm.

i wear my sunglasses at night

Last night at Hiro was fucking amazing. Seriously, I don't remember the last time I had so much fun DJing or been in a room with people who love 'Electric Barbarella' so much. I was kind of nervous about djing at Hiro because technically it's a club and I'm not really a club sort of girl but I really LOVED it there. The atmosphere was great, no one asked for any hip hop and Courtney Taylor left his sunglasses in the booth and I wore them and that made it kind of hard to see anything but it looked like people were dancing. Peter played some amazing mashups that I haven't heard before (and will now shameless steal). Hoorah!

Courtney Taylor came. I played Saints and Lovers and he told me "this band sounds like they really want to be The Strokes." And I was like Um... okay... but they don't actually sound anything like each other at all, but I'll go with it... Then he said something about Pearl Jam being the most influential band (Jed, I think I found your soulmate...), and then he told me that he wasn't going to DJ but could I hook up his ipod so he can play the entire new Dandy Warhols record?

So we did that, and he stood in the booth the whole time sort of acted like he was DJing, going through our cds and taking the headphones on and off. Courtney Taylor is rad. It was pretty crowded and I didn't really get to give the album a good listen but some of the tracks sounded pretty good. I have no idea when the album is even coming out or if what he played was really even mastered. Maybe he told Peter? hm?

Around 2 am we went over to Lit, where Audrey has moved her excellent Atomique party, and that was fun and at some point I decided it would be a good time to go to bed. Then I got sort of lost in Bushwick, but that all worked itself out and so... yay! Happy day.

Do you not know about the "secret" Beck show? Go here, tickets on sale at 5, pw is girls blah blah blah. I'm sure you know all about it already.

Lunch time!

chewing gum

Remember when the Kaiser Chiefs played at Spin? Well now you can go and download some great MP3s of the performance! Get those here. There is also video so you can see Ricky bopping around in his hat, etc. etc. I recently heard who the next Spin performers are going to be, but I'm going to be out of town. So for those of you who get to go, just know that I will be quite jealous of you for this one.

Also new on the Spin site, you can watch my dj partner Peter interview Bloc Party. Unfortunately he waited until after the cameras were off to slip Kele my number. Oh well!

There are a lot of good shows this weekend, while I will talk about soon. But for now, if you like Annie, like EVERYONE ELSE DOES, here is the info for her private party @ Tribeca Grand Hotel tomorrow night.

I, for one, really don't understand all the Annie hype. I think that "Heartbeat" is an OKAY dancy song, but nothing amazing. And Chewing Gum is possibly one of the most irritating songs ever. I think I heard it at H&M or some other store and had to evacuate. But everyone seems to be having an Annie love affair. Maybe seeing her Thursday will change my mind. Or maybe the vodka open bar will. Hmm...

hi. ok. i know the thing i posted before was going to make your day. so now let's talk about what made MY day.

First of all, I'm djing at Hiro tomorrow night for the new weekly party called Cheeky B*stard. Hiro is located in the Maritime Hotel (16th street and 9th ave). The party starts at 10, and to get on the guest list for free admission, just send an email with your name and the # of guests you're bringing to alejandro@gbh.tv.

And then about five minutes ago, my DJ partner Peter IMd me to inform me that we were going to be DJing with COURTNEY TAYLOR of the DANDY WARHOLS.

So I almost peed my pants. Go RSVP now.

one of us is dead

I haven't had a lot to talk about lately. With getting ready for the roadtrip and Coachella and all, I've put music sort of on a backburner (since Coachella is musical overload as it is).

Moving on... the thing I want to talk about today is called a group called The Earlies. This half-british and half-texan transatlantic (no joke) four piece have an album out called These Were The Earlies that is a perfect mellow listen. Full of lush harmonies, electronics, psychedelia, and gorgeous instrumentation, this album is perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon. Goes well with a cup of tea. That kind of thing. They recently played a few shows at SXSW, and hopefully will be returning stateside soon.

The Earlies : Wayward Song

The Earlies: 25 Easy Pieces

It should also be noted today that KEXP has all of last weeks live sessions in New York up and organized for easy listening. Go here

jack white + satan = new album

i have zero interesting things to talk about today, and i'm not allowed to talk about what i'm doing tomorrow. but i figured this would be interesting to a good majority of people i'm either dating or friends with or who read this blog. so here you are:

New White Stripes album: Get Behind Me Satan. (ok then...)

The album will be released on June 6 in the UK and June 7 Stateside.

The first single, "Blue Orchid", will be released one week earlier.

While some tour dates have already been announced, Jack White has told the LA Times that he and Meg plan to play "events" rather than traditional concerts in initial support of the album. He went on to say, "First we're going to play where we are not well known. Then if we have time, we will play New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Frankly, we are waiting for technology to advance in the United States before we attempt to perform this record live there."

All this info comes from the nice folks at Pitchfork.

Track listing:
1. Blue Orchid
2. The Nurse
3. My Doorbell
4. Forever For Her (Is Over For Me)
5. Little Ghost
6. The Denial Twist
7. White Moon
8. Instinct Blues
9. Passive Manipulation
10. Take, Take, Take
11. As Ugly As I Seem
12. Red Rain
13. I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet)
--------------------------------------------------

- also, The Upwelling with be on Fearless Music tonight, 8:30PM on Time Warner Cable channel 35. TV tonight

Also performing on the show will be Elkland, Metric, Go To Town, The Shore, Benzos, Bamboo Kids, and Gogol Bordello.

For more information, go to: www.fearlessmusic.tv

- and finally, Madison Strays will be back with their second show of the year this Sunday, details tba. I just got a great email from a fan of theirs from SCOTLAND so I'm pretty excited today to see them live again.

she's hearing voices

hi. i'm blogging on the weekend!

mainly because Fuse has the video for Bloc Party's Banquet as their "Oven Fresh" video. Go watch!

also, at Misshapes last night, there were so many topless boys in the DJ booth at once... so hot, it may have been oven fresh as well.

(if the fuse video doesn't work or you find the fuse website as annoying as i do, rolling stone has the 'banquet' video and the video for 'positive tension' over here.. although 'helicopter' is the song i currently cannot get out of my head)

it's a beautiful day out. time to go do my taxes!

holla! or... challah!

Ahh... Friday.

Last night I went to Jamba Juice and then I went to the darkroom and then they played Kriss Kross "jump around" and i ran into a guy I went to elementary school with... so bizarre (words like bizarre and weird are kind of becoming commonplace in this blog, have you noticed? oh well!).

Over the course of the night, I heard mixed reactions about the Bloc Party show at Bowery, but I've always heard mixed things about them and when I saw them at Motherfucker I thought they were fucking hottt and sort of brilliant, so kinda wish I had a ticket to see them play tonight. Unfortunately their afterparty was a clusterfuck of mass proportions, which probably was complicated by lines down the block to get in the door and the filming of what we assumed was that Lindsay Lohan movie at the same intersection. And they were playing hip hop when we finally got upstairs at Pianos, and after the Kriss Kross thing it was just kind of too much for me. Sometimes, as a DJ especially, I really wish there was no such thing as hip hop (not all the time, just sometimes!)

Did you miss Dutch Kills on KEXP yesterday? So great. I listened to it live and was sitting at my desk unable to function because it was so great and I was so happy for them. Now I'm listening to the streaming archive, and if you missed it then you can too! Just go here and enter the info for yesterday (April 7th) and 7am (that's Seattle time) and enjoy!

They are playing Rothko on May 10th also, more info on that tba.

Louix XIV sold out Bowery Ballroom. Bring on the eyeliner and sex music.

The Killers play Summerstage on June 4th (via Jay Goodtimes who has mad love for Webster Hall - and a very good point. and he really wants you to stop crying too, you crybabies)

And finally, and to go back to the whole 'no hip hop' thing, tonight + red and black + 2 for 1 drinks 10-11 = hot party. oh ya, and husky g and i will be on the decks so please come and say hello and how are you and tell me your name.

wtf am i talking about?! blah. 135 n fifth and bedford in williamsburg, 10 until lockdown.

also, i must wish a happy birthday to Dennis Cahlo!

toodles

we don't say i love you enough

First of all, on Tuesday I drank too much red wine and went to see Morning Theft play at Mercury Lounge for the first time. They were excellent, I was sleepy, Pat was fantastic. They let me sell merch after the show, and now have new t-shirts (that were DESIGNED by Pat... although ok Dan picked the font). Their new EP (which you can buy on their website) also quite rules and the whole thing was just GOOD. The highlight of the show was a great performance of "song of resignation" which I think really stands out in a good way. They are playing in Hoboken @ Maxwells tomorrow night again with John Davis of Superdrag (who I missed but who has really cool buttons), and then on Saturday in Boston @ TT The Bears.

If you don't feel like trecking to dirty jerz on Friday, however, I cannot recommend enough that you get yourself to Mercury Lounge to see PS. I've raved about this band on several occasions, and unfortunately I am going to miss out on this show because I will be DJing in Williamsburg. Lucky for me, they were willing to share these exclusive MP3s with me, which I will now share with you because I was paying attention in kindergarten and know how to share and because the songs are just THAT GOOD. Sharing is caring people.

PS - Gaaabidge (this song just plain rocks out. swear to god, just wait for it. love it)

PS - Three Words (a very sweet, romantic song. play it for your significant other or for your friend with benefits when you want to take it to the next level)

PS plays Friday, April 8th at 10:30pm

Kaiser Chiefs are coming back again! Apparently we just can't get enough of them. For serious. They are also apparently going to be playing Lollapalooza this year, and for 35 bucks for BOTH days (if you buy one of the first 2000 tickets between April 7th and 14th) in my home town of Chicago I think it will be very very difficult to pass up.

This year's festival is going to be in Grant Park and apparently over 70 bands are playing on five stages.

here are Kaiser Chief tour dates:
Philadelphia Theatre of Living Arts (May 24)
Asbury Park Stone Pony (25)
Montreal Club Soda (27)
Toronto Mod Club (29)
Chicago Park West (31)
Minneapolis First Avenue (June 1)

So if you missed him at Shout! on Sunday, head over to Rothko for his 9:30 set and stay for special "cloud cocktails" and The Comas who I have heard many good things about also. Catch that info here.

who sucked out the feeling?

While I thought my LAST weekend was pretty weird, this one kind of took the cake in the weird department. And not all weird in a bad way... and maybe I should just resign myself to the fact that my life is pretty weird most of the time.

Friday night was the prom thing that I djed at Tavern On The Green. For all the chaos that went on leading up to it with getting the PA system set up and everything ready to go and all the arguing about this that and the next thing, I think the event went over really well. My beef about teh whole thing was the way that I was regarded by the staff at Tavern who were something more than shocked to see a female DJ. In fact, for most of the night, despite my being behind the decks almost the entire time besides bathroom breaks, I couldn't tell you how many times people came up to Jed and requested songs or asked me to TELL THE DJ (also known as Jed, the GUY who was hanging out with me occasionally) what songs they wanted or that HE was doing a great job, that they were impressed, blah blah blah. WTF decade are we living in here???

Yeah so that was pretty insulting, but the party went really well anyways and I got free dinner, dessert and booze for five hours and got a chance to wear the dress from my birthday party again.

Saturday I djed at The Skinny with Peter and drank a pint glass of redbull and vodka whilst he fretted about having to carry me out of the bar on a stretcher. Never fear, all was well, and I got people to dance to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and happily denied any requests for Kanye West and Linkin Park. I love DJing with Peter, because he has good style and will play the Killers for me as the last song even tho he doesn't like them and now he comes with his own remixes! Hottt!

We will be djing @ Red and Black this Friday if you care to come and find out what I am going on about. And you really should.

In other assorted news...

-- The KEXP studio sessions are this week and there are still spots open in some sessions, including Thursday's with Dutch Kills. If you can't make it out, make sure you turn in for some great music.

-- The Upwelling are currently streaming tracks from their new "live" album on their website. This stuff sounds fucking amazing so please go over and have a listen. A lot of the songs will be new to you and they are good stuff.

-- Last night I was supposed to go watch the Yankees vs Red Sox game with Rob Holmes, but I didn't and the Red Sox lost anyways and we all know how Rob feels about that. So to make Rob feel better I'm going to tell you to go to see Morning Theft's show tomorrow night @ Mercury Lounge. The are playing at 10:15 and the opener is Jonathan Davis from Superdrag. How very awesome.

Oh.. and did I mention that Pat will be there? Uh huh!

-- Otherwise this time change has me totally screwed up. I think I might be sleeping as I write this. What time is it anyways? I don't even know.
